My Reading List

Surprisingly I do keep a reading list, even if there are times I completely ignore it and get distracted by something else. (That happens freque… Squirrel!)

You get the point.

But there are certainly a list of books that I’m not already in the middle of reading that I want to tackle in the nearish future, and since I don’t have a book review prepared for you today, I thought I might give you a preview of things you might see cropping up later in the year. (If you ever want to go through reviews I’ve done in the past, don’t forget to check out my Book Reviews page that has links to them all.)

Please keep in mind that I’m sure there will be reviews for things you don’t see here, and things you see here may also not get reviewed. But it’s summertime! The great time of reading and relaxation! Err…. once we get the house put together a little better anyway. Still, I’m greatly looking forward to having a porch to sit on while enjoying a book again instead of a concrete staircase with loud children running up and down it…. (yay apartments!)

In no particular order…..

Memnoch the Devil by Anne Rice

Needful Things by Stephen King

Misery by Stephen King

The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks

1Q84 by Haruki Murakami

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

The Space Trilogy by C.S. Lewis

The Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan / Brandon Sanderson (I’ve read the first 3 books once upon a time, but I need to start over because it’s been too long. And this is one of my husband’s all-time favorites that I’ve been promising to read forever…)

I guess there’s kind of an overwhelming fantasy/dark theme going on with that list. I promise there are brighter things I’m in the middle of reading too!

What are you reading? Do you have any suggestions of favorite books? I’m open to most genres (except Westerns or Romance unless it’s got a really great plot). Let me know!

Hey, the Night Angel trilogy is on my TBR list as well!

And good on you for going through WoT. I tried to read it — in large part because Brandon Sanderson is awesome — but I made it 200 pages into the first book and realized if I had to spend another 200 pages reading about Mat I was going to bend the source code of the universe so I could travel into the book for the sole purpose of throttling him.

(I asked Rebekah if he got better. She said no.)

I have a ton of book suggestions, but many of them are romance novels. :-) Mostly steampunk or Victorian, and that’s in a large part because the dialogue is usually hilarious and perfectly witty and I LOVE IT so much.

What turns you off about the genre, out of curiosity?

I like romance to be part of a story, but I’ve encountered too many ones where we never left the love and sex part and got on to a plot. If it has a good plot WITH the romance, I’m definitely not opposed to trying it out! Give me a couple of your favorites as suggestions. I’m definitely up for witty dialogue with steampunk/Victorian tones.

As far as WoT, I read the first book in one night. (Way to go Lissa for waiting to get my reading points in my 9th grade English class until the very last minute…) I then read the next two, and just got distracted afterward. By the time I was ready to come back, I only remembered the basics and knew I’d have to reread the ones I’d already gone through. It’s Clay’s favorite series though and I’ve promised him FOREVER that I’d read it. So it’s time I start working my way through.

I’m actually about 50 pages into the first book of Night Angel and so far it’s excellent. Clay informs me he was a little disappointed that the ending of the trilogy was as neat as it was because he likes messy, real-life, anything-can-happen stories where you can’t be certain anyone will live or turn out safe in the end. (He loves Game of Thrones for this very reason.) But that the rest of the series delivered the gritty tone he likes.

There’s just way too much to read out there!

All right, here are a couple of steampunk recommendations:

Soulless by Gail Carriger (first in the Parasol Protectorate series) – I reviewed this on my blog a couple of months ago. This is a steampunk novel of the paranormal variety, meaning we get vampires and werewolves in addition to witty Victorian dialogue and funky goggles. (Plus, I just love the characters. They’re so much fun.)

She’s also going to be one of the speakers at the Nimrod conference this October, so my goal is to finish the Parasol Protectorate series before then so I can geek out appropriately.

The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook (first in the Iron Seas series) – I absolutely LOVE the world that Brook has created here. The alternate history, the half-living/half-metal creatures, the modifications people have made to themselves…it’s all fascinating. I really, really want to say more, but then again I don’t because it’s so much fun to discover.

And they spend a good chunk of the novel tooling around on an airship. :-D

If you get a chance to read these, be sure to let me know what you think!

It’s officially evil that your two recommendations are SERIES…. just saying. lol But I will add them to my list for sure; they sound great!

Here’s a very eclectic group of books i’ve just finished reading: shine by lauren myracle – a beautifully written book about prejudice, insurgent by veronica roth – the sequel (sorry, another series!) to the fantastic divergent, a dystopian YA novel, the year of the beasts by cecil castelucci, a YA/graphic novel fusion of epic proportions, between shades of gray by ruta sepetys – a historical fiction novel set in a WWII russian work camp.

i also read the cs lewis space trilogy as a kid and loved them. hope you do too.
